South-South News Hosts Reception to Promote Food Security

24 November 2014, New York, USA | Shari Nijman - Following the success of a high-level meeting on establishing food security through South-South Cooperation, which saw UN offcials, ambassadors and government representatives exchange best practises, a special reception was held at the South-South News Headquarters.

“We heard in the course of our discussion held today, many interesting presentations from the different stakeholders about the importance of South-South and Triangular Cooperation,” Ambassador Francis Lorenzo. President of the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development said. “As well as the need to make sure that food security be placed in the top of our political agenda, in order to ensure that rural and urban populations benefit from active social policy.”

Sharon Brennen-Haylock, Director of the FAO Liason Office in New York, ephasized that the discussion about Food security and South-South cooperation is a timely one: “We all know that in the new development agenda agriculture, food security and nutrition will be very important issues in the news development agenda. As will South-South Cooperation,” she said.

The reception put a spotlight on the overarching priority of food security, as well honoured the achievements of the various UN agencies working towards eliminating hunger an achieving greter development around the world.

I am very inspired, Ambassador Abdul Momen, Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations said. And I have no doubt, that one day we will win. We will solve the problem. In my own lifetime, I am hopeful, that poverty will be eradicated from this planet earth.

“We have witnessed the political will and decidions from developing countries to go ahead with this agenda,” Lorenzo concluded.” Not only in the contect of the united Nations, but also as part of the larger dialogue with civil society and the private sector.”
