De Mistura on the Syrian Ceasefire

3 March 2018, New York, USA | South-South News — The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said, “The United Nations has not given up and will not give up until it is 'blue in the face' in asking for a full implementation of a UN Security Council resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria.”

Speaking to reporters on March 1 following a meeting of the International Syria Support Group's Humanitarian Access Task Force in Geneva, Staffan de Mistura said, “We cannot afford to have the luxury of giving up… We are not frustrated, we are determined because this otherwise becomes the copycat of Aleppo.”

The Special Envoy appealed to both sides in the conflict to enter into a ceasefire and allow aid convoys to reach those most in need, particularly in eastern Ghouta. He said that the top priority needs to be “stopping the suffering and the tragedy of the civilians in eastern Ghouta and elsewhere.”

De Mistura also announced that details will be released in the next few days about an initiative to continue the political process of ending the Syrian conflict. However, he said that while the UN is working hard to find a political solution, “we are also aware that when people are dying the priority is to stop the dying.”
