UN Reaction to Korea Talks

12 March 2018, New York, USA | South-South News — UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres was “encouraged” by the announcement of an agreement between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to hold a summit meeting by May.

Speaking to reporters in New York on March 9, Dujarric said the Secretary-General would do whatever he could to help facilitate the process and remained “at the disposal of all the parties involved.”

Guterres commended “the leadership and vision of all concerned” parties and reiterated his support for all efforts towards peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions.

Asked if the recent developments were a result of UN political chief Jeffery Feltman’s visit to North Korea in December, Dujarric said the visit was “an important element in the way forward.” He stressed that the UN was “not in any way taking credit, or trying to take credit for what is happening”, but added that Feltman’s visit “was a move in the positive direction which has led us to where we are today.”
