16 Feburary 2017, New York, USA | South-South News — The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has launched an appeal for $253 million to enable the UN's human rights arm “to contribute to important institutional and policy advancement across every region of the world.”

During an event on February 14 at the UN Headquarters in New York, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said the Human Rights Appeal 2017 “is above all an appeal to sanity and sound investment.”

He said the funds would enable his office to “counter the rising waves of hatred, xenophobia and violence; we can advocate a broad, open, democratic space and impartial rule of law institutions in every country; we can contribute to sound governance of migration and continue to advance the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.”

Zeid said “our aim is to receive extra budgetary contributions from all states as a symbol from their universal support to human rights.”
