2012 South-South Awards Set To Honor E-Governance & Sustainable Tourism Gains

11 September 2012, New York, USA | Afaf Konja - The 2012 South-South Awards- the 2nd annual high-level gala event to be held on September 23, is set to bring in heads of State and Government, permanent representatives to the United Nations, top UN officials

and other distinguished guests from the private sector and civil society to New York's iconic Waldorf-Astoria hotel to honor transformative work being delivered in E-governance and sustainable tourism through policy and program initiatives successfully advancing sustainable global development.

The ceremonial event is themed "E-Government and ICT Infrastructure while looking ahead to the future of Sustainable Tourism", aimed at raising awareness on the critical work of the United Nations and honors governments, organizations, and individuals who have made significant contributions that ultimately help to achieve the internationally agreed upon 8 UN Millennium Development Goals, (MDGs) based on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, as well as the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs), based on global economic, social and environmental growth.

This year, South-South Awards will be hosted by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and South-South News and the night will be serenaded with special performances by world renowned artists and is becoming an annual awards ceremony much anticipated.

Setting the bar last year in what was received as a spectacular awards ceremony, the inaugural South-South Awards was televised live via satellite on September 19th, 2011, and brought in dozens of heads of State and Government, UN ambassadors, leaders from the business community and civil society along with top celebrities to its home venue, the Waldorf-Astoria. The star line-up featured world-class entertainers and celebrities like Kenny G, Don Felder, formerly with the Eagles, Roberta Flack, Keaton Simons, and Miri Ben-Ari, along with the All-Star Band led by renowned music director, Robin DiMaggio. "Digital Health for Digital Development," geared the evening, as the theme of last year's South-South Awards, recognizing outstanding innovations and applications of information and communication technologies. The high-level gala was hosted by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and South-South News.

The special evening kicked off with a red carpet entrance honorably receiving the over twenty heads of state and government and numerous other dignitaries and special guests who came to show their support to the cause of the evening and of the future: "Digital Health for Digital Development."

The 2012 South-South Awards is setting in the anticipation of spotlighting an array of positive developments across Africa, a world-class line up of entertainment from North America, Latin America and Africa, while promising to reveal just how information communication technology (ICT) is expanding the realm of what is possible in various aspects of e-government and sustainable tourism, across the globe.
