VIENNA, 19 May 2017 – On the occasion of the World Metrology Day marked on 20 May, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) published a new brochure, “The role of Metrology in the context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”.

Metrology, or the science of measurement, plays a central role in exploration and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, as well as in improving the quality of life and safeguarding the environment.

In the brochure, UNIDO and its partners - the International Bureau of Weights and Measurement (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) - explain the importance of metrology in the context of specific development goals.

UNIDO has a long track record in providing technical assistance related to metrology. Since 2009 UNIDO, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) have partnered to strengthen AFRIMETS’s capacity to facilitate trade of African products.

This partnership resulted in the Strategic Roadmap 2012-2016 — a snapshot of the scientific, industrial and legal metrology in Africa. This document identified and analyzed gaps in measurements of standards and legal metrology and proposed a number of recommendations for the development of a sustainable continental metrology infrastructure.

Under the Trade Capacity Building Project for Zambia, Phase II, funded by Norad, UNIDO assisted the development of curricula for professional training in legal and industrial metrology. The curricula will raise the level of qualification and competence of metrology personnel and improve the quality of metrology services, the benefit of which includes high employment outlook, fair trade, health and safety, law and order and consumer protection for sustainable economic growth and development in Zambia.

The World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention - the worldwide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

The World Metrology Day project is realized jointly by the BIPM and the OIML.
