The UNRWA field education programme Gaza organized a ceremony at Beach Preparatory Girls School B (Beach Camp) on 11 December 2017 to mark Human Rights Day. The event was attended by the Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza,  Mr.

Matthias Schmale, the chief of the field education programme, Mr. Farid Abu Athra, in addition to other senior UNRWA officials, teachers and parents. The ceremony included activities such as songs, sketches and a drawing competition for the students. Parents also participated in an activity where they shared views on gender equality and non-discrimination in the Gaza Strip.

During the event, the Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza commented: “All of our over 270,000 students had a dedicated human rights lesson each week until the end of the school year 2016/2017. Starting from this school year 2017/2018, we integrated human rights lessons in all school subjects with one aim being that students obtain a more comprehensive understanding of their rights and duties in line with the international conventions on human rights.”

UNRWA will continue its effort of more than ten years to integrate human rights, conflict resolution and tolerance in its school activities. A perfect example of translating the values UNRWA is promoting through human rights education into meaningful action is the UNRWA school parliaments. Through the school parliaments, UNRWA provides opportunities for students to develop their skills in leadership, planning, constructive dialogue and discussion, creative thinking, problem-solving and decision-making, preparing the future generation for leadership.
