After weeks of traveling on foot through Mexico, thousands of Central Americans have reached the country's northern border hoping to cross over and apply for asylum in the United States. But an increasingly hostile Trump administration is working to prevent that.

On Sunday after members of the so-called "migrant caravan" rushed the San Ysidro crossing, US President Donald Trump ordered the temporary closure of the southern border. The incident prompted US Border Patrol agents to fire teargas into an unarmed crowd that included women and children, drawing condemnation from the administration's critics. At least 98 asylum seekers were arrested by Mexican authorities, who have also vowed to step up border security.

What will be the fate of thousands at the border? News of a deal to allow Central Americans to remain in Mexico while their US asylum claims are being processed were denied by incoming Mexican government officials. In addition, Trump has attempted to block US asylum eligibility for people arriving in caravans, but that order has been temporarily suspended by a US judge.
